Artist
Alap Momin’s life is one dedicated to music. For thirty years he has been at the center of sonic innovation and creative experimentation, and he’s more than earned his reputation as growing musical legend. Beginning his musical journey as a kid in punk bands to starting his first recording studio at age 19, Momin’s deep love of music made him gravitate towards a wide range of styles. He found his footing early on as a producer and DJ, and the list of artists Momin has produced, remixed or collaborated with reads like a who’s who of the underground: Krautrock legends Faust, Tigerbeat6 boss Kid606, UK dub step precursors Techno Animal and The Melvins with Jello Biafra…the list goes on and on. As a DJ, Momin was one of the founding members of the revolutionary hip hop outfit dälek, a band who paved the way for all noise-infused hip hop thanks to his signature sonic washes and dissonant grooves. He was also one part of Harlem dance duo MRC Riddims. Whether he is making noisy hip hop, dark house and techno, warping pop records or molding shoegaze textures with booty bass beats, Momin’s sound is anchored by an Indian ancestral drone that drives his search for what he calls the ‘The New Heavy’ – new ways of being immersed and submerged by sound. This journey has led him to his first solo project BKGD Audio. It began with remixes for Baltimore Club producer Schwarz, Italian Techno DJ Mr3P, Swedish Skweee legend Joxaren, as well as contributing music for forward thinking club labe
