Bülent Evcil was born in Istanbul in 1968. He started his flute training under the tuition of Prof. Mükerrem Berk at the State Conservatoire of Mimar Sinan University and graduated there from with the highest distinction in 1988. In the same year, he continued his studies at the Royal Brussels Conservatoire under the tuition of Marc Grauwels with a scholarship from the Istanbul Philharmonic Foundation. He graduated in 1992 with the Diplome Superieur avec Grand Distinction for flute, winning the Premiere Prix for chamber music as well. He continued his studies at the Heidelberg-Mannheim Music Academy under the tuition of Jean-Michel Tanguy and obtained the Artistic Education (Künstlerische Ausbildung) degree with the highest distinction (score=1) in 1996. Bülent Evcil then won prizes and awards in various competitions among which were the second prizes in Turkey’s National Wind Instrument Competition, the Wolfgang Hoffmann Wind Instrument Competition and in Best overall Performer Award at the fourth James Galway International Flute Seminar in Dublin, later giving him — from 1992 onwards — the possibility of being Sir James Galway’s student. This world-famous flute virtuoso acclaimed Evcil as one of the best flautists of his generation.
