about

Aziz Herawi {عزیز هروی} (b. c.1952) is an Afghan musician, specialising in the dutar and rubab, both plucked string instruments. Born in Herat, Afghanistan, he first heard the dutar being played when he was seven years old; he persuaded one of the family servants to buy an instrument for him from a shepherd. The boy would wait until his father was asleep, then sneak into the woods surrounding their home and practise in the dark.. Herawi has lived in northern California, U.S.A., since 1985, and has released several albums. His music involves a blend of Persian and Hindustani instruments and styles, and is considered to be typical of Herat, Herawi's home town, near the northeastern border with Iran. * Official site User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply.
