Aya’s journey has taken him from his native confines of Sydney, Australia to the sun-bleached corners of Los Angeles. This transcontinental passage spans several years and a lifetime of sonic observations and lyrical wanderings, and is remarkably noted in his latest LP, Waking Dream. But such compelling distillations of the human spirit such as Waking Dream are not achieved through time and distance alone. Aya Larkin’s musical pilgrimage began in 1992 fronting the legendary Sydney-based band Skunkhour. From the start, the group earned critical acclaim and climbed the Australian charts with its self-titled first album. Noted for Aya’s genre-defining lyrics and signature vocals, the auspicious debut led to Skunkhour’s signing with major labels Sony and Universal. Three more albums, extensive world touring, and widespread underground popularity in the UK, Europe and Japan followed. After a decade in the limelight, Aya awoke in a new-millennium Los Angeles, eager to concentrate on a more stripped-down version of his craft.
