AVRO Dansorkest (1938 - 1939) conducted by Klaas van Beeck Of the five Dutch radio stations, the broadcaster AVRO (A.V.R.O. Algemene Vereniging Radio Omroep), based in Hilversum, in the Netherlands, was the first to employ a more or less modern dance orchestra. Background: 1. The first AVRO band or orchestra, was led by Kovacs Lajos (real name Louis Schmidt) and was referred to as AVRO band Kovacs Lajos en zijn orkest (1931 - 1936). By 1930s standards, this first AVRO band was not regarded as a resounding success compared to its rivals such as The Ramblers led by the commercially astute Theo Uden Masman 2. A second AVRO band or orchestra the A.V.R.O. Decibels (1935 - 1936), was led by the charismatic Eddy Meenk. He had previously been a trumpet player with The Ramblers and the A.V.R.O. Decibels became very popular. Transcriptions from 1935 provide evidence of a solid, modern orchestra, that might have become a serious rival to The Ramblers, had its life not been cut short by a scandal involving two of its female fans. Unsurprisingly for the time, AVRO found this uncomfortable and closed the band down in April 1938. A.V.R.O. Dansorkest 1936 - 1938: 3.
