Autochtone were an Oxford-based leftfield indie band, active 1999-2005. Initially a solo project for songwriter Dan Gavin, Autochtone became a more tangible concern in 2001 with the additions of Alistair Curd and Tim Hancock. The band's live shows, the bulk of which took place in the Oxford and West Midlands areas, would be characterised by the frequent swapping of instruments, yet the most common arrangement would see Dan on lead vocals and guitar or keys, Alistair on drums and Tim on bass. The band recorded three EPs, which gained a largely positive - yet modest - reception from critics, fans, labels and radio stations. Autochtone's 15 minutes of fame arrived in 2005, as Rob da Bank played 'The Last Thing She Ever Said' (from final EP 'By Day And Sleep') on his Radio 1 show. The track went on to chart at number 17 in the station's Festive 50 countdown at the end of that year. However, by then Autochtone had already ceased to function in any meaningful way, and the band's website was mothballed soon afterwards, though no official split was ever declared. In more recent times, Dan has performed new solo material under the name Thy Deep & Dreamless Sleep, and is a writer for the Drowned in Sound webzine. Meanwhile, Tim is a member of London band Fireworks Night. User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply.
