Austero is a Mexican rock trio from the state of Chihuahua in northern Mexico. The band’s lineup consists of Rafael Ruiz, Robi Ruiz and Luis Perea. Their music is centered on distorted guitars and a power-trio approach that blends hard rock with grunge, noise rock, and slower, more atmospheric passages. Austero recorded its first full-length album, Austero, at Electrical Audio in Chicago with Steve Albini, and the record was released in June 2020. In 2024, the band revisited its EP Espejo with an expanded version that added the track “Mental”. Press coverage has described Austero’s sound as drawing from 1990s alternative rock and grunge, with comparisons to acts such as The Smashing Pumpkins, Sonic Youth and The Melvins. The band has also cited a range of influences from classic rock to alternative rock in platform profiles and interviews. In 2025, Austero released the single Go to the Light (Too Old to Die Young), credited to Austero and Nick Oliveri.
