Audioslave was an American rock supergroup formed in Glendale, California, in 2001. The band consisted of Chris Cornell from Soundgarden on lead vocals and rhythm guitar, along with Tom Morello on lead guitar, Tim Commerford on bass and backing vocals, and Brad Wilk on drums, all formerly members of Rage Against the Machine. Early commentary described their sound as a fusion of the two previous bands, though by the release of their second album, "Out of Exile," they were regarded as having developed a distinct musical identity. Their style incorporated elements of 1970s hard rock and 1990s alternative rock, with additional influences from 1960s funk, soul, and R&B. The group emphasized that all sounds on their recordings were produced solely using guitars, bass, drums, and vocals, highlighting Cornell’s vocal range and Morello’s experimental guitar techniques. During their six-year career, Audioslave released three studio albums: "Audioslave" (2002), "Out of Exile" (2005), and "Revelations" (2006). They received several Grammy Award nominations, sold more than eight million records worldwide, and became the first American rock band to perform an open-air concert in Cuba. The band disbanded in February 2007 following Cornell’s announcement that he was leaving the group. Audioslave reunited briefly for a performance at Prophets of Rage’s Anti-Inaugural Ball on January 20, 2017. Cornell’s death later that year ended the possibility of future reunions.
