Ashcan School is a Seattle band formed in 1995 and active until the early 2000s. A combination of psychedelic blues and rock with a Seattle edge. Synthesizers, searing guitars, Hammond organ, pounding drums and silk like vocals create a unique and haunting sound. The band was one of the earlier adaptors of MP3 streamable music and for a while in 1998 was the most downloaded band in the world, with even the Vatican streaming their music! Big in Japan, Ashcan School concert video was broadcast to 30 million people over the NHK Japanese national network in the late 1990s. Ashcan School represents an era in music where bands are free to pursue their artistic expression without commercial restraints but with readily available world-wide audiences. Ashcan’s first album “Down by the Tracks” was a 1998 collaboration with A&M records and David Collins (David has done work with Neil Young, Grateful Dead, Soundgarden and many other seminal bands). The album was mostly recorded in Seattle, WA at the Reciprocal Recording Studios (then called John and Stu’s) where just 10 years prior Nirvana spent $600 to record Bleach. Ashcan School’s second album “The Fishmonger’s Wife” was recorded over 20 years ago but was never released and only became available in 2023. Band Members: Arne Baas: keyboards; Dan Butler: lead vocals, guitar; Howard Lazarus: bass; Ron Lyse: drums; Dan Wuthrich: lead guitar.
