Artist
Based in Berlin and born elsewhere, Arya Zappa is a multidisciplinary artist with an unusual voice. Growing up through destruction, the act of creation was her first language. Playtime was seen as a chance to build up and then breakdown; her toys, her environment and finally herself. From the age of 7, she had already sculpted two separate lives, the world around her and the world of ideas. For Arya Zappa, the act of making music is more important than most. It’s easy to trivialize the power of personal expression because many artists do. For Zappa though her approach is almost ancient, treating sound as a guide and a healer. We can hear an artist breaking and then reconstructing their identity one layer of noise at a time. In the resulting music, a Cronenberg-Esque body horror effect is felt, the sound of the body and mind separating and confusing the body into a spasm. With the voice taking center stage Zappa becomes a narrator of dystopian post-war cityscapes, bending under the pressure of progress like a Larkin poem told by Fellini. Zappa’s music is charged with a darkly erotic pulse that invites the listener to reconnect to their deeper parts of sensation. As we witness her cross the threshold into our physical world ask yourself how sure of yourself you really are. In times like these nobody can be sure but it can be fun finding out.
