Artist
Artur Avanesov was born in Moscow in 1980 and moved to Armenia as a youth. He began his formal music studies, in composition and piano, at the Yerevan State Conservatory, where he graduated in 2002; he continued there with post-graduate work in composition and musicology, graduating with his doctorate in 2005. Artur is currently an Assistant Professor of Composition at the Conservatory. Artur is the composer of numerous chamber, piano, and vocal works. He has participated in several contemporary music festivals, including the ISCM World Music Days (Switzerland, 2004) and Perspectives XXI (Armenia, 2000). Among the awards he has won thus far include 1st Prize at the Britten Chamber Composition and Sarian Vocal Composition Competitions, both held in Armenia in 2003 and 2004. As a pianist, Artur possesses a repertory spanning from the late Renaissance to contemporary works, with - not surprisingly - an emphasis on the latter. He has performed some 70 world premieres of piano works by composers from Armenia, Georgia, Germany, Finland, and Portugal. In 2003-04, Artur participated in the Lucerne Summer Music Festival, and in 2003 performed with an ensemble led by Pierre Boulez. He is also the co-founder of the AUS Contemporary Music Ensemble (formed in 2001), which performs works of young composers, as well as those by established composers from Armenia and abroad. Finally, as a musicologist, Artur is co-editor of the journal Musical Armenia, where he has published articles on t
