Ars Phoenix is a darkwave/synthpop trio featuring Jonn Gauntletier (vocals, synth, guitar, bass VI, sampler/drum machine), Caitlin Grimalkin (vocals, synth), and Michael (synth, electric violin). Their layers of analog and digital synths, drum machines, and reserved vocals often draw comparisons to the usual suspects of late-70s/early-80s post-punk, but the addition of heavily overdriven and delayed guitar, male/female vocal harmonies, and a tendency toward post rock-esque crescendos and shoegaze-inflected textures put Ars Phoenix firmly outside the retro camp. Currently residing in Southeast, FL, the band remains associated with the Gainesville, FL music scene, where Ars Phoenix was transformed from an essentially defunct solo project to a working band in 2008. Since that time, Ars Phoenix has toured the South East, South West, North East, and mid-Atlantic US numerous times, most notably in support of a cassette single on the Locrian-operated Land of Decay label (Amethyst, 2013) and a full-length vinyl LP on Etxe Records (Violent Rain, 2014). Ars Phoenix will embark on another tour in July 2015 to support a recent release on Dead Tank Records & Popnihil (Shinju w/ Burnt Hair, 2015).
