www.myspace.com/argopelters Originally named for something in "The Lord of the Rings", friends and guitarists Wilhelm (aka William Douglas) and Lysander (Alexander Drivanos) first started playing covers of Modest Mouse and the Grateful Dead in Ho-Ho-Kus,New Jersey. In school, in a history class Wilhelm, Lysander, and the talented percussionist Sir Alfin (Andrey Igdalov) joined forces. While absent-mindedly reading "Balderdash" cards (a board game of lesser known terms) they stumbled across "Argopelter": "An arborous creature living in tree trunks that throws rocks at passers-by.* Most of the material contained on their first--and only--studio recording was written in a basement in the house W's parents were renting. Playing almost exclusively original material, they were described being "Ambient Rock at it's most ambient and rocking", according to one dazzled audience member after his first 'Pelter experience. They also became well liked for their covers--especially Modest Mouse's "Dramamine" which they would get enthusiastic requests for at every show...or at least once. They broke up soon after recording the album. It is titled "Whelks, Gourds, and Other Things Unfamiliar." 'Helm and 'Sander rejoined with the help of a very differently styled drummer named Riad Azar and formed the evolved creation of Argopelter which was not intended to be eponymous, but named Lysander. *full name for the band was Argopelter vs. Kokopolo.
