Arek Gulbenkoglu is an improvising guitarist based in Melbourne, Australia. Gulbenkoglu's typical approach involves prepared acoustic and electric guitars, but beyond obvious comparisons with peers like Keith Rowe or compatriot Oren Ambarchi, Gulbenkoglu's work tends to the textural and intricate, commonly favouring small and carefully placed detail. Yet his oeuvre also includes substantive and monolithic drones. Gulbenkoglu has also stated his concern to get beyond the common trap of conceiving the improvised performance as the work, and the recording as mere documentation; his record Points Alone was described by the label as "carried out with the conception that the listener's speakers would be the ultimate instrument themselves and as such this work is focused beyond the guitar itself and beyond the live improvised moment" (Impermanent). Gulbenkoglu has been active on the Australian experimental scene since 1997, playing a numerous festivals, including several performances at What is Music?. In addition to the Impermanent CD Points Alone (Impermanent 006 β Bagatellen review), Gulbenkoglu's works include a self-titled release on Document (Document 09 β Bagatellen review). Recently Gulbenkoglu has collaborated closely with Dale Gorfinkel and Rosalind Hall, most prominently in their 'Infinite Music Machine' (Westspace 2009, with Peter Blamey). Other releases include one with Adam Sussman (of Stasis Duo), and several releases as a member of improvising group Dworzec. Use
