Anton Andreas Schmelzer (also cited as Andreas Anton Schmelzer and Schmelzer von Ehrenruef) was an Austrian Baroque violinist and composer born on 26 November 1653 in Vienna and who died there on 13 October 1701. He was the eldest surviving son of the noted Viennese violinist and composer Johann Heinrich Schmelzer, and followed his father into musical profession within the Habsburg court’s musical establishment. After the death of Johann Heinrich, in 1681 Anton Andreas was appointed the official composer for ballet music at the imperial court, a position formalised in a decree on 27 February 1681, though he relinquished that appointment in 1693 on account of health issues. His output is described in modern reference summaries as including a considerable corpus of ballet suites and chamber works, among them music composed for courtly entertainments and orchestral dances; a monographic study dating from 1914 examines the ballet suites associated with Anton Andreas and his father as part of the musical life at the Austrian court in the seventeenth century. Beyond his official court service and his compositional activity, fuller details of his training and personal life remain thinly documented in the accessible reference material, but his work is recognised as part of the Viennese instrumental tradition that developed under the Habsburgs in the later seventeenth century.
