about

Antoine Lardenois was a French composer, born in Paris around 1610 and died in Dax after 1681. He worked in the Catholic milieu as well as in the Calvinist movement . His earliest known work is a now lost mass published in Paris around 1645-1650 by Ballard. Lardenois developed a version of the melodies of the versified psalms by Clément Marot and Théodore de Bèze which aimed to facilitate their singing. It consists in using only a single key, the key of C in the 3rd line with a flat in the key, and therefore in raising or lowering the melody until it matches this key signature. These editions, published between 1651 and 1684, offer the melody either in the first verse, or in the first verse and after a page turn or a break, or throughout. They are often accompanied by a short method “to learn the ordinary song of the Church”. User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply.
