Artist
Dr. Anthony Newman was born in May, 1941, iin Los Angeles. Although he is known as a concert pianist and composer, he is best known as a performer of Johann Sebastian Bach's organ works. As a teenager, Newman studied both the piano and organ in France. He then returned to the States and earned a B.S. from Mannes College of Music in 1962. He started working on his composing skills while earning a Master's from Harvard in 1963. He later earned a Ph.D. from Boston University. Newman's first major concert recital was on the harpsichord at Carnegie Hall. In addition to performing, he spent the next decades teaching (at Julliard, among others), composing, and leading his own period-instrument group, Brandenburg Collegium. Additionally, Newman is a widely recorded artist, with over 140 releases on numerous labels by the end of the Twentieth Century.
