Anthony Halstead

Anthony Halstead (born Manchester, England, 1945) is a British horn player and conductor, a leader in the field of historically informed performance. He is particularly known for his mastery of the natural horn and for his long collaboration with Roy Goodman and the Hanover Band. He studied piano, horn, organ and composition at the Royal Manchester College of Music (now the Royal Northern College of Music) including studying conducting under Sir Charles Mackerras and Michael Roase, but finally specialised in the horn. He was first horn with the English Chamber Orchestra and also has performed with the London Symphony Orchestra as well as teaching at the Guildhall school of music in London. During the 1980s and 1990s he worked increasingly in the field of period instrument performance, recording in the capacity of soloist and orchestral player with Christopher Hogwood, John Eliot Gardiner, Trevor Pinnock and of course the Hanover Band. Towards the end of the 1990s he began to concentrate more on conducting and direction, beginning a project to record all the works of Johann Christian Bach with the Hanover Band.
