Chronic physical illness, emotional turmoil, and a touch of spiritual madness can all add up to some excellent grist for a songwriter’s mill. Such was the case of Anthony Burbidge, the Canadian singer whose path to the creation of his latest CD, “Newborn,” was fraught with unforeseen opportunities for personal, artistic and spiritual growth. In 1993, during his graduate year of the classical music program at Mt. Allison University, Burbidge released his debut disc titled, “The Road To Rome.” Shortly after, however, the singer’s life took an unexpected turn when he succumbed to an uncommon condition known as Environmental Illness. In the interest of healing himself, Burbidge put aside his musical aspirations for what he expected would be a year of well-deserved rest and recovery. What followed, however, was a decade long journey that would take the songwriter not only into the heart of his illness but also to the very core of his being. While he struggled to recover his health, Burbidge also held down a full time job that kept him close to the music he so dearly loved. As a manager of an independent CD store, the singer had access to a wealth of music and immersed himself in over ten thousand albums, both broadening and deepening his musical palette in preparation for his inevitable return to the stage.
