Another Castle reimagines rock music. Don’t get the wrong impression – Danny keeps his bass amp turned right up, Leo hits the drums as viciously as anyone, Pat’s guitar can barely stay in tune for how hard he attacks the strings, and the singing shows the kind of rock’n'roll vocal stamina built by years of practise and sore throats. But Josh Wayman’s organ and piano sounds hark back a couple of decades to when keyboards actually ROCKED, those rock’n'roll voices are able to blend and soften into two- or three-part harmonies, and Brendan’s accordion – sometimes pretty, sometimes grating and harsh – is as important a part of the band’s sonic identity as any of the traditional “rock” instruments. The band formed in 2007, when fresh-faced songwriters Pat McKenna and Brendan Kelly recieved a surprise entry as an acoustic duo into a local Push Start Battle of the Bands competition, and decided they wanted to turn up with a rock band instead. That competition was won, as was the next round, and as a result the young band found themselves on the bill for the 2008 “Push Over” all-ages music festival, still under the simple name “Pat and Brendan”. The next few years were spent around Melbourne and the outer Eastern suburbs, playing whatever gigs were available – including consistent gigs for the local Youth Services programs. There’ve been a lot of changes over the years – a real band name was eventually decided on, and the lineup has set: Pat on guitar and vocals, Brendan on accordion
