The sound they produce isn’t entirely new – in fact: it’s been around for thirty years. The late seventies and early eighties saw the birth of groups like Wire and The Feelies. These groups tried to express something that was loathed by most of the punk scene: bouncy intelligence. They recognized the fact that you could take a pop song anywhere as long as it possessed some kind of melody – instead of making the song some kind of vehicle for half-harted political sentiments. As time progressed, most of the punk records gathered dust – but the stamina of groups like Wire was never in doubt. Nowadays the pop landscape is totally shattered. There isn’t one leading trend – anything goes. Boredom is a well-seen guest in pop music nowadays. The punch line goes like this: everything’s done – why make an effort? Needless to say that the sentence above is often quoted by groovy hipsters. Fortunately enough there isn’t a single member in another bandname that has some kind of X-factor.
