In their acclaimed 2015 book Animal Music, journalists Tobias Fischer and Lara Corey talked to scientists, creatives and experts in a bid of finding answers to that age-old question. Inspired by the book, four renowned musicians from the world of improvisation and sound art are now exploring the connection in practise. Recorded live on the occasion of the international release event of the book and after a full day of talks and discussions, these two gigs see David Rothenberg's jazz-tinged clarinet lines, Elliott Sharp's eclectic guitar patterns and Korhan Erel's perplexing transformations interact with field recordings of animals. Instead of simply running these animal sounds as a backing tape, Lasse-Marc Riek is playing them like an instrument within the context of the group – opening up a dialogue between these two worlds. Human and animal creativity are merging here, revealing surprising overlaps and structures and that sound intriguingly familiar and complementary. Is it music?
