Aniceto & Campolino are Aniceto do Império (1912-1993) and Nilton Campolino (1926-2001), two samba gods and arguably the most important exponents of partido alto, a sub-genre of samba characterized by improvisation and (humorous or not) disputes. Partidos are characterized by a static chorus (refrão), which is sang by everyone present in a samba performance, and the improvised verses, which are soloed by one or more versers (versadores) who will be competing in some way. In 1977, very late in their career, Aniceto & Campolino released their first record, O PARTIDO ALTO DE ANICETO & CAMPOLINO, when Aniceto counted 65 years. The album is considered a classic of the genre. Partido Alto "has its origins in the religious parties in rural communities where jongo was played, a type of music very rooted in Africa, accompanied by drums called candongueiros, angumativas and caxambus. It has been present in samba from the beginning; there are songs which are considered partidos dated from the 1930s. There's a traditional jongo nucleus around Rio de Janeiro's samba school Império Serrano, from where both Aniceto and Campolino hailed, which is active to this day."
