Angel Witch are a British heavy metal band formed in London in 1976 and are recognized as one of the pioneering groups of the new wave of British heavy metal (NWOBHM). The band was originally established as Lucifer by guitarist and vocalist Kevin Heybourne and went through several line-up changes before adopting the name Angel Witch in 1978, with Heybourne remaining the central member. Their self-titled debut album, "Angel Witch," was released in 1980 by Bronze Records and is considered a seminal work in the NWOBHM movement. The title track received notable airplay on BBC Radio 1's Friday Rock Show. Despite critical acclaim, the band faced management and record label difficulties, which led to their initial disbandment in 1982. Angel Witch reformed in 1984 and has experienced multiple hiatuses and personnel changes since. Heybourne has consistently led the band through periods of renewed activity, including performances at festivals such as Bloodstock Open Air in 2009. Their fifth studio album, "Angel of Light," was released in 2019 via Metal Blade Records. Musically, Angel Witch combine elements of Black Sabbath’s foundational heavy metal with the speed and energy of Motörhead, characterized by a dark, melodic sound and occult-themed lyrics. The band are widely regarded as an influence on later thrash, speed, doom, and extreme metal acts.
