Anarka and Poppy formed in 1982 in Preston, Lancashire, emerging from the local squat scene in Preston. Anarka and Poppy were brought together after Nihilist Insurrection, a previous local band Sean and Jane were in, had split. Anarka and Poppy were comprised mainly of animal rights activists and anarchists - animal rights and anarchism being the subject matter that our songs were solely comprised of. As well as the band, most of us were involved in constant protests and direct actions of varying natures. We were in and out of the police cells, the courts, even prison for one of us, for the duration of Anarka and Poppy's existance. Anarka and Poppy played Preston and surrounding areas, Manchester, Liverpool, Blackpool, Bolton, St.Helens, Wigan etc... mainly confined to The North and nearly always played benefit gigs for one relative cause or another. The band also recorded a five track demo tape at Twilight Studios in Manchester... subsequently selling over 200 copies at Π1 a throw. We also produced our own zines and literature comprised of animal rights and anarchist content. In 1983, Anarka and Poppy recorded a three track single for All the Madmen Records based in London, comprising of: If It Dies We Die/Acceptance/Nightmare. The single was never released. The master tape was retained by the then bankrupt All the Madmen Records. We had one copy on tape but that got lost over the years. Throughout the few years we existed as Anarka and Poppy we gigged with the likes of:
