Artist
An Historic is currently the solo studio project of composer and accordionist Adam Matlock, who has played every instrument on the releases so far. An Historic is a songwriting project that frequently appears solo in concert, just accordion and voice, with some aspirations toward a fuller sound. An Historic has played shows in the Northeast and in Canada, and would like to do so again. Recording a split with Cud Eastbound for the near future, and further on has a full album written and mostly arranged for eventual recording with real musicians some day, hopefully soon. Influences range from the haunted voices of Jeff Buckley and Antony, the gleeful stomp of the entire cabaret continuum from Kurt Weill to Tom Waits, the raucous vocal and instrumental inflections of spirituals, Klezmer and Balkan folk, and the surreal narrative imagery of Jose Saramago and Randall Kenan, paired with Kathy Acker's tamer flights of fancy. Matlock was raised in parts of Massachusetts, studying classical piano and singing spirituals in his youth. He played in rock bands in high school and early in college, before picking the accordion in a Klezmer ensemble, a choice which has influenced him to this day. In addition to An Historic, Matlock also records electro-acoustic/ambient music under the name G. Zarapanecko, and writes long form new-music compositions under his own name.
