Amy's Ghost make beautiful songs which offset Amy Barton's voice against gentle piano tones and other gently woven instrumentation. The result is an incredibly atmospheric, melancholy and (dare I say it) haunting set of songs. They're a five piece who describe themselves as "a hungover Kate Bush, hitting on Jeff Buckley, at an avant-guard drum and bass party...with cream and a cherry on top." which is a fair description and characterises the distinct sounds each member brings to the music. Though the idea of a delicate female voice offset against heavily sustained piano parts may not scream originality, it's in the additional instrumentation and sound that the music really comes into its own. Whether with brooding electronica rumbling away into your subconscious as Portishead are known to do, or complimenting strings that give the music a more whimsical air, invoking reminders of epic storytellers The Decemberists. It's in this that the band get their signature sound and what separates them from their immediate contemporaries. The band haven't been in existence for very long, but individually have been involved in numerous projects prior. However, with the distinct sound they create, the sonic chemistry suggests they've been playing together for eternity. There's a drama running through these songs which invoke emotions as though you were being told a fanciful story, taking you far away and to another place. The forthcoming album, The Dance Of Defeat is due for release on
