On the heels of other musical projects (American Culture eXperiments, American History Project) Jared Himstedt began putting some beats together loaded with obscure vocal samples and the occasional vocal track. After seeing Reeve Hunter (Math Minor, My Korean Friends) perform a solo set sometime in 2000 or so he became convinced that Reeve was the collaborator he had been looking for. The two spent 6 or 7 years writing at most three tracks a year, some years with no output at all. This hip-hop side project was exactly that. With less than ten live performances ever, one real album never released and random leaked tracks that got burned for friends, Reeve moved to Chatty-vegas and that was it. Other musicians filled in the gaps live spinning records, playing bass, drums, guitar, keys or whatever: Jason Himstedt, Luke Greco, Justin Horrell. "Hailing from the nearby (to both John and myself) town of Waco, a name fraught with the stigma that will always endure, thrives a music scene that never ceases to surprise me. Quite a few youngsters from in and around Baylor University have come together to produce what is a slowly evolving Waco sound, rooted in shoegaze and 90's indie rock, with smatterings of growing up listening to Biggie and Tupac. While most of these talented youth steer in the direction of indie-pop and post-punk balladry, a few side projects and collaborations have produced some riveting and original hip hop.
