Amchok Gompo Dhondup was born in a nomadic family in Amdo, Tibet. He didn’t have the opportunity to go to school when he was young, but he taught himself how to play the damnyen (a six-stringed lute) while he was herding yaks in the mountains. He also learned many songs from the elders in his village. When he was 14 years old, he started to study Tibetan folk music. He studied from many legendary Tibetan folk musicians in Amdo Machu. After he completed his music studies he participated in many musical competitions and won many awards. In the year 2000, he went to India as refugee, and met with HH the Dalai Lama who asked him to teach at the Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts. He taught there until he came to Canada. In the year 2005, he came to Canada through the Banff Center. Since coming to Canada he has continued to tour internationally as a musician and studies English, Western music, and computers. At present he is one of the most respected artists in the Tibetan community as has recorded seventeen albums.
