Alvin Lee of Ten Years After retreated to his barn studio with singer-songwriter and gospel performer Mylon LeFevre (Holy Smoke) to record "On The Road to Freedom." Also contributing to various songs on the album were Ron Wood, Mick Fleetwood, Ian Wallace, Boz Burrell, Steve Winwood, Jim Capaldi, and George Harrison (credited as Hari Georgeson).
