'Ajam is a London based band that was formed formally in early 2010 as an off-shoot project from the 'Simorgh' group. Despite 'ajam's recent formation the main members of the group have been playing music together since 2004.Their music draws influence from various everyday music genres but has a strong base in the native music of Iran and in many ways their music can be described as 'Iranian Roots Music'. Live performances are very fluid and can vary from unplugged acoustic sets to lively club sets with a more electronic soundscape. Recordings always feature a strong presence of Iranian melodic instruments, thick layers of live percussion and both synthesised and live Bass with Modern production sensibilities. 'Ajam is a cultural experience. In addition to the raw energy of tribal and ritual music that inspires their sound, elements of dance and movement are incorporated into live shows. The root of this word can be traced back to a term used to describe 'non-Arab' Muslims and literally meant 'illiterate' 'Ajam try to bring the epic, energetic, and often aggressive spirit of the regional musics of Iran to this generation.
