Artist
Agnes High Quality were a post-rock/electronic group from the greater Cleveland, Ohio area from 2000-2005. They self released two albums: 2002's En Passant and 2005's Lucas With Changing Parts. The band consisted of three members. Stephen Poprocki, Heinrik Hellwig and Tim Thornton rotated between Guitar, Bass, Percussion, Synthesizer, Sampler, Laptop/sequencer and several other instruments. The band also incorporated several field recordings of non-musical sounds into their compositions. Early on, the band's sound was heavily influenced by progressive rock, mostly due to the three members' previous tenure in a heavy metal band. As the band progressed, their sound became less rock influenced and more rooted in mathematical patterns and minimalist classical. The song Eemasng, the band's newest song at the point of release of their first album, changed phrases and time signatures based on a fibonacci sequence. The title track of the second album expounded on that approach, reaching 18 minutes of audio with instances of Lucas Sequences deftly placed in the song on several levels. Agnes High Quality disbanded in August 2005, when Heinrik and Stephen both moved out of Ohio to pursue post-graduate worth in Philosophy and Physics, respectively. Tim currently makes electronic music as Les Cousins Dangereux and experimental music as Tiger Village.
