Agent Elf first came about in 2001, but the guitarists Hasan and Paul have been writing music since before that. When their original drummer left in 2005, a new drummer, Jess, was quickly recruited. After that the band went off in a new musical direction and became a more experimental band that embraced a much broader and eclectic spectrum of music. So Agent Elf spent a year writing and perfecting some new material, and just when they'd nailed it, a fourth member emerged. Ash decided to hop on the Elf band wagon to 'lend a hand with the synth', but it soon became apparent that his skills with a laptop would compliment the electronic sounds that were fast emerging in the new Agent Elf material. And so the current Agent Elf sound was born. Describing the music is difficult. Agent Elf take the heavy/soft dichotomy of Mogwai, park it up alongside some QOTSA-style riffage, sprinkle it with some 65daysofstatic/Boards Of Canada electronic garnish, and then go off on one with it, incorporating anything from gabber to Arabic folk music to dubstep to trip hop. Pigeonholing the Agent Elf sound is a challenge, and that's exactly how they want it. User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply.
