DAN BOADI & THE AFRICAN INTERNATIONALS - Money Is The Root Of Evil, Aestuarium Jamie Hodge's label comes correct with a masterful follow up to the Philip Cohran Artistic Heritage Ensemble's "On The Beach" masterpiece. This time the focus is purest funky Afrobeat, two long jams adorning this wicked twelve. Dan Boadi rose to prominence mid-70's, topping the national charts in his native Ghana with the Abrabo LP, which apparently "sold like apples". Dan decided to try his luck in the United States, arriving in Chicago in 1978. With little fanfare, he released Money is the Root of Evil in a limited run of 500 copies. The LP's two cuts, "Money is the Root of Evil" and "Play That Funky Music" launched the propulsive Afro-Beat of Nigeria's FELA KUTI into the majestic, psychedelic abandon of the American dancefloor. At least that was the intention. What should have become a venerable Loft/Warehouse monster passed unnoticed. Dejected, Dan returned to Ghana, unable to grasp his would-be American market. BOADI returned to the US at the end of 1991 and what he found was a very different set of circumstances. An optimistic BOADI proclaimed, "Okay, we've got to start a band right away, we're going to try this again." BOADI's new group, GHANATTA, found itself right at home in Chicago's Afro-Caribbean circuit, fitting in with the newly defined "world music" market.
