Adrian Le Roy - Born: 1520 - Died: 1598 Historically speaking Le Roy was one of the most influential people in the development and propagation of the French musical style in the sixteenth century. He and his cousin Robert Ballard established a printing and publishing company which king Henri II gave privelege to and which was attributed with the title of the royal music pinter. The company had little competition and was heralded by Henri II, Charles IX, Henri III and Henri IV. It is important to note also that Le Roy & Ballard published and printed the music of Lassus and the company was responsible for making Lassus' music known. A great deal of Lassus' music came to the attention of the public for the first time through the printing establishment of Le Roy & Ballard. As a musician, Le Roy was a virtuoso lutenist, guitarist and citternist. His compositions were respected and pedagogical in nature; Le Roy wrote books on the theory of music and its rules. Le Roy successfully composed chansons and instrumental pieces. In some cases the instrument parts of his chansons would duplicate the vocal line. Works were also written by Le Roy with the intent of teaching the amateur how to play the guitar, lute and cittern various instruments. ~ Keith Johnson, All Music Guide User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply.
