Artist
Abu Obaida Hassan, Arabic: أبو عبيدة حسن (also spelled Abu Ubayda Hassan), was known for his rhythmic combination of Nubian and Arab music styles played on a modified tambour. He was born in Sudan’s Northern State in 1952, and died on September 2, 2021 in Khartoum. Hassan was from the Shaigiya people, and grew up listening to his father play the tambour. He learned to play himself as a child, and when he was 19 he added an extra string to his tambour to begin creating a new sound. He rose to fame in Sudan through radio exposure and was at the height of his career in the 1970’s and 1980’s.
