Abu Baker Salim, also known as Abu Bakr bin Salem bin Muhammad bin Shihab (Arabic: ابو بكر بن سالم بن محمد بن شهاب), was born in 1937 in Hadramaut, Yemen. His father died when he was one year old, and he was raised by his grandfather, Muhammad bin Shihab. He began his art when he was 16 years old, with the song “You Came to Walk Slowly.” He graduated from the Teachers Institute in 1957 and worked as an Arabic language teacher in Aden. During the summer vacation every year, he would go to Lebanon to record an artistic tape. He officially became a professional artist in 1961 and left the field of teaching. He stopped singing in 1967 due to the setback of the June War. He returned to singing after the October 1973 war with the tape “Ma’alina”/“Dhabi al-Yaman”. He is married to two women and has 6 sons and daughters: Asila, Adeeb, Angham, Ahmed, Alif, and Asil. One of his daughters is married to the great artist Ahmed Fathi.
