Apple Maggot Quarantine Area was a hardcore punk band from the state of Washington in the 1980s. AMQA's early style was a quirky blend of classic American hardcore, but they evolved into more of a punk/metal crossover style that was typical of many popular punk bands of the time. Their lyrics often reflected an absurd sense of humor about topics related to rural working class life in the Cascade foothills beyond Tacoma. The band formed in 1985 in Puyallup, Washington. They released their first vinyl recording, the "Cats Are Neat" 7-inch EP, on Seattle's Subcore Records in the summer of 1986. They released a full-length LP titled, "Mutant Cats from Hell", on EverRat Records in 1988. They also recorded several tracks for compilation records. AMQA was a fixture of the legendary Community World Theater in Tacoma. They toured the western United States and played many notable shows, including the opening night of the 924 Gilman Street Project on New Year's Eve, 1986. AMQA broke up in 1989, but released one final track on the "Metal Ribbons" compilation in 1991. Founding members of AMQA went on to form Seaweed and Portrait of Poverty.
