A.V.R.O. Dansorkest Conducted by Hans Mossel (1936-1938) On the 2nd July 1936, the Dutch broadcaster the A.V.R.O. (Algemene Vereniging Radio Omroep) based in Hilversum founded the first A.V.R.O. Dansorkest to succeed its A.V.R.O. Decibels, which had been deemed 'morally tainted' by a scandal involving two female fans over the Christmas period of 1935. The A.V.R.O. Dansorkest was led by the clarinetist Hans Mossel and played jazzy American dance numbers. It lasted until August 1938, playing live for radio-broadcasts, and relatively few of their thousands of broadcasts were recorded. This first band was in turn succeeded on the 13th September 1938 by the second dance orchestra of the same name, the AVRO Dansorkest. This second band was led by the pianist Klaas van Beeck and did not feature Hans Mossel. Quite a number of their recordings survive. The second band lasted until 1939, when it was renamed to the AVRO Dance Band, which was disbanded in 1940. The broadcaster, AVRO has its own 'artists' entry.
