The vast majority of the wealthier dwellers fled from the plague. Only a small number of clerics, doctors and apothecaries decided to stay. Several sanitary measures were ordered. The municipalities put pest physicians into service and funerals were organized in detail. The inhabitants were urged to light fire by day and night precisely because it was thought to clean up the air. In the capital the death toll from the plague passed the number of 70.000. The Great Fire of London which took place from the 2nd to the 5th of September 1666 nearly destroyed a third of the overpopulated residential and commercial districts of the city. This event stalled the devastation of the plague as all of the contaminated rats and fleas burnt in the flames. The fire itself consumed 400 streets, 13.200 houses and 87 parish churches thereunder the old Saint Paul's Cathedral, Newgate City Prison, the Royal Exchange, the Custom House, 3 of the 4 city gates, the german Stalhof and Christ's Hospital where during the plague 32 orphans died under medically unexplainable circumstances. The only remaining document of this "incident" was the medical file of Matthew Grindhausen. Matthew Grindhausen was born in 1657 in Clerkenwell's dictrict.
