5th Faction was a deathcore/groove/beatdown metal band formed in the fall of 1999 in Queens, NY. The lineup included John Collett on vocals (Success Will Write Apocalypse Across the Sky, Dehumanized), Danny Trapani on bass (Praeter Morte, Whorelord, The Forrest Gump Mile High Marathon), Anthony Fernandez (a.k.a. The B.Q.E. Kid) on guitar and Fellipe Monteiro on drums (Evelyn Red). The band's music was a fusion of driving metal riffs, off-time syncopation, deathcore-style vocals and the signature beatdown-hardcore "NYC" sound. The band played live all over New York City, Long Island, New Jersey and Connecticut, releasing the "Controversial Demonstrations" demo in 2000 and the "Year of the Rat" demo in 2001. Their song "Project Mayhem" also appeared on the "Feel the Pain" NYC hardcore compilation released in 2000. In 2001, drummer Fellipe Monteiro was released from the band and later replaced by Mike Gulluscio (Whorelord, This Year's Addiction, Apotheosis), adding a more death metal feel to the drumming and the overall sound. In the spring of 2003, 5th Faction entered the studio with Ken Schalk (Candiria) to record their debut album, "Self-Reliance". They then embarked on a short tour of the US East Coast that summer. Unfortunately, the album was never properly released due to the band dissolving in the fall of 2003, before the album was able to be mastered and pressed.
