315 ? What kind of name is that? When questioned, the man himself would proffer up an answer that either reflected his mood or yours, word plays, some obscure bit of pop arcana--or would say it meant absolutely nothing at all. My favorite reply was that it was his Archies fan club number! Anyway, the music on this disc, much like the name game, reflects that humor, spontaneity and daring that his life seemed to be all about. A friendly offer to record in the home studio of Zod and Stan Satin was taken up during the Xmas break of 2OO3. In town that week from 3's home state of Iowa was one of his oldest friends and free music collaborator Bob Heimer, who played bass on the first session. Also in town was former upstairs neighbor and member of 315 & the New Mock Stars, John Vignault (Vendettas/White Lights) who played guitar. A second jam session in January 2OO4 commenced with the addition of Stan Satin (Vietnam/ Method Actors) on sax and bass and Ana Balka (White Lights) on violin, moog and guitar. David Watkins (Pillowtexans/Vietnam/Blacktop Rockets) played drums on both sessions. 315, of course, lead the sessions with his bluesy electric guitar atmospheres. The results were seventeen improvised songs of no-wave punkabilly jazz/folk mood music. Count to 3 and go, swim through the sound, splash some humorous lyrics, end it when the feeling is over.
