17 Dogs is an experimental soundscape project of Neil French, who samples and reprocesses sounds such as children's toys, abandoned buildings, computer games, and domestic appliances: 'When I hear beautiful sounds I want to turn them in to something ugly, and when I hear ugly sounds I want to turn them in to something beautiful'. 17 Dogs also incorporates instruments like piano, synths and accordion, often played in broken or out of tune states. Ranging from grotesque industrial drone to ghostly dark ambient, each song soundtracks a dark corner of history; with occasional, abstract, and monotone narrations about the occult, medicine, and crime.
