(young) American Landscape is an instrumental post-rock band from Asheville, North Carolina that formed at the demise of Asheville Indie/post-punk band Torches. The band started when longtime friends Jonathan Atkinson, Anthony Kirby, JD Ebert, and Jon Halsey began jamming on lengthy instrumental compositions and decided that they wanted to start a band in line with the cinematic instrumental bands that they loved such as Mono and Godspeed You! Black Emperor. After they completed several songs together they formed (young) American Landscape, they completed a demo and began playing shows around western NC and upstate, SC in early 2010. In the spring of that year John Halsey announced that he would be moving several states away to be with his family and the band found a replacement guitarist in Spartanburg, SC musician Jacob Fowler (formerly of instrumental trio We Were Kids). After integrating Jacob into the band full time they began playing shows again and writing new material that summer. They announced later that year that they would soon be recording their first full-length album. In January of 2011 the band began recording both at Giraffe Studios in Hendersonville, NC and at JP studios in Inman, SC. That spring bassist JD Ebert also announced that he would be moving to be with his family, which left (young) American Landscape looking for a bassist.
