Vernon has started young in the entertainment industry. As a baby, he has won the title "Best Smile Award" for New York Baby Model Contest. At the age of 5, Vernon and his family all migrated to Seoul, South Korea following the 9/11 bombing. This allowed the young Vernon's modelling career to finally take off. He was a child model in various magazines such as Living Sense, Woman Sense, and for a reality TV show Super Mom by Story On in 2009. Aside from modelling, Vernon has also starred in various television shows in South Korea such as Vroom Riders by KT Skylife (2009-10); EBS’ Lalala Happy School; Jei TV's Eye to Eye (2011); SBS’ Kids Explore Life (2010-11); and MBC's Hello! Stranger (2014-15). Vernon also had cameo roles in other shows and music videos. One of which is a '100 Icons of Korean Culture' episode by Arirang TV. Another was in one of KBS World's 'Explore Korea' episodes with other Seventeen members. Meanwhile, the music videos he appeared in during his pre-debut days were Man of K's 'Falling'; then labelmate Hello Venus' 'Venus'; and for the promotional MV of Big Bang's 'Shouts of Red' for the 2010 FIFA World Cup alongside his Kids Explore Life co-hosts. He was believed to be casted by Pledis Entertainment after he went on the audition program by the JTBC channel entitled Made in U in 2012. He only reached up to the Top 50.
