Rock 'n' roll from a nightmare future. SHLEM is a vibrant and distinctive band from Saint Petersburg, Russia, formed in 2019. Their sound is rooted in modern hardcore punk, blending elements of rock 'n' roll, danceable energy, and even black metal influences, such as tremolo picking and blast beats. Their style can be likened to a mix of bands like Motörhead, Kvelertak, Black Flag, and Dead Kennedys, creating a unique sonic cocktail that leaves listeners feeling as if they’ve woken up in a strange place after a wild night. The band’s lyrical themes revolve around cosmic and fantastical characters, including a mysterious figure known as the Helmet Bearer and the Mayan serpent god Kukulkan. These themes bring depth, irony, and a sci-fi atmosphere to their songs. Vocalist Pavel Mraček, the last member to join the band, was inspired to create these lyrical worlds after receiving a mysterious helmet from a friend who had brought it back from Eastern Europe. This helmet eventually became the band’s namesake and the foundation of their lyrical identity. SHLEM has released two albums.
