Artist
Trombonist/Composer/Producer First playing piano at the age of seven, his familiarity with music began long before putting his mouth to a trombone. However, struck with an overwhelming curiosity in his father’s trombone, young Žiga Murko soon switched his focus from piano to trombone. He studied 11 years classical music with acclaimed classical artists like Branimir Slokar and Dušan Krajnc. During this period he was also part of the successful Trombone Quartet 3+1, which won the 1st price at Temsig National Competition 2006 for Brass Bands. After graduating high school in Koper, Slovenia, he switched to Jazz Trombone and moved to Rotterdam, Netherlands. His instructors there were European trombone masters Bart Van Lier and Ilja Reijngoud. In this period he had the opportunity to meet and learn from masters of jazz like John Abercrombie, Jason Moran, Bryan Lynch, Arturo Sandoval, Maria Schneider, Steve Turre, Alex Sipiagin, Ralph Peterson and many more. 2009 he joined the musical collective Next, which is a musical collective with its own unique musical concept, in which it unites the modern jazz language with other musical genres, and finally spice it up with the sounds of musical traditions from the Balkans, in a quest to create the music of the next. He is part of Jan Kus – Amna as well, a project combining Jazz and Flamenco. Recently he became also part of Zlatko Kaučič Kombo, an innovative collective under the mentorship of acclaimed Slovenian drummer Zlatko Kaučuč.
