Šemsa started singing in 1971 and her first professional release was a 1978 extended play (EP) called Otišla je ljubav s našeg kućnog praga / Ja zbog tebe sve (Love was gone from our doorstep / I do everything for you). It was followed by another EP, Gledam srećne ljude / Šta je s tobom u poslednje vreme (I am looking at happy people / What's going with you these days) (1980), and a full length studio album in 1982, entitled Vjerna u ljubavi (Faithful in love). Suljaković's first studio album was also her first collaborative album with the band Južni Vetar. She went on to record a total of ten albums with them between the years 1982 and 1991, the year the Yugoslav Wars broke out. When the Yugoslav Wars started in the early 1990s, Šemsa held concerts in Europe and The United States of America to raise money for the Bosnian people. Šemsa's biggest hits are "Što me pitaš" (Why are you asking me), "Mi se volimo" (We love each other) (with Mile Kitić), "Ne ne ne" (No no no), "Južni ritam" (Southern rythm), "Pristajem na sve" (I agree to everything), "Zašto si se napio" (Why did you get drunk), "Razbio si čašu" (You broke the glass), "Voljele se oci crne i zelene" (Black and green eyes loved one another), "Sanjam" (I'm dreaming), "Lažu te (with Sejo Kalač)" (They lie to you) and "Zar za mene nema sreće" (Isn't there happiness for me).
