Áskell Másson was born in Iceland in 1953. He began playing the clarinet at the age of 8 and later studied percussion at the Reijkjavik Conservatory and privately with James Blades in London. From 1978-1983 he was a music producer at Icelandic Radio, after having worked as a composer and percussionist with the Ballet of the Icelandic National Theatre between 1973 - 1975. Since 1983 Áskell Másson has been a freelance composer. He was Secretary General of the Icelandic Composers Society (1983 - 1985) and President of STEF (Copyright Society) until 1999.
