À Deriva presents a very unusual repertoire for instrumental music, to say the least. Its varied influences, drawn outof contemporary improvised music, have broughtto the band the freshness and spontaneity of collective improvisation on its own song writing. The band's intention is to go beyond the pre-conceived and rehearsed arrangements of these compositions, allowing the chemistry among the musicians create a new piece of music in each presentation. Music becomes a free territory for experimenting, and experimentation brings forth new textures and colours.Itis this idea thatinspires the name of the band: music is, as well as the musicians, always drifting...(Adrift,in English) À deriva, already a two year old foursome, has been featured with an ever-growing success in the São Paulo jazz scene. The unique sound and conception of its work causes the band to keep a distance from some commonplaces in jazz and Brazilian instrumental music, like the priority given to virtuosity over musicality and the splitting apart between theme and improvisation. The band wants to stay clear of conventional labels that frame genres and create aesthetic patterns:furthermore, itwishes to smooth or even erase the borders between differentstyles of improvised music.
